Cupra E-Racer Concept Reveal
SEAT’s standalone performance brand Cupra surprised attendants with the reveal of the first electric touring car, the Cupra E-Racer Concept.
Cupra earlier this year reformed as a standalone performance brand of their parent company SEAT. The first Cupra standalone model was revealed shortly after, the sporty Ateca crossover which we previously covered here. Now the new brand are making news again with a world first concept, the Cupra E-Racer electric touring car.
The new concept is said to be based upon the Leon TCR touring car, swapping a traditional engine for an electric powertrain. The results are staggering, with the Cupra E-Racer outputting 670bhp compared to the Leon TCR which produced 325bhp. The vehicle is powered by two electric motors powered by a 65kWh lithium-ion battery pack.
Real world performance figures also impress, with the E-Racer accelerating from 0-62mph in a mere 3.2 seconds and 0-124mph in only 8.2 seconds. The concept is said to be developed further, with Cupra considering entering the vehicle into touring car racing events this year, a year before an all-electric series is created next year.
CEO of Seat, Luca de Meo was quoted saying “...racing should be efficient and clean, and by introducing a new and revolutionary car like this, we want to send an important message to the racing world. It is possible, it is spectacular and it is fun.”
