Equifax director Neil Munroe was “not surprised” by a Which? Identity fraud survey revealing that one in four people in the UK had been a victim.
It also said one in five were not fully reimbursed for their losses.
Munroe said: “We can help consumers resolve the matter with their financial services provider, but the immediate impact is that their credit rating is seriously dented”.
