The winner of the 2010 Car of the Year has been announced. The Volkswagen Polo is officially the best car you can buy in Europe.
The results came after votes were gathered from each of the 59 European judges and scored the maximum number of points, including 25 selections as the number one car. The vote was very close though, as the supermini just managed to beat the Toyota iQ which received 58 votes with 20 selections as the best car, making is second.
The final results are determined from a list of 33 new cars which are voted on by a panel of top-notch European car journalists. They whittle this down to a shortlist of seven cars, and then the 59 European judges make their selections with each judge having 25 points to allocate where they think best.
Third place went to the new version of Vauxhall’s Astra hatch, fourth to the Skoda Yeti, with the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Peugeot 3008, and the Citroën C3 Picasso respectively completing the final seven shortlisted cars.
In the 45 years that the awards have been running, this is the first time that the Polo has picked up first prize, and even though Volkswagen has been shortlisted eleven times for its cars, only the Golf has managed to win the award before, in 1992.
