Suzuki has been promising us kizashi (Japanese for ‘something great is coming’) for a couple of years now, with teasing concept cars alluding to a serious move into the mid-range luxury saloon market.
Now, finally, with the official launch of the Kizashi in Detroit – and if rumour is to be believed, in Frankfurt too – we can see what all the fuss has been about.
Suzuki are not the first name you think of when it comes to larger, more luxurious cars, with a strong reputation at the smaller, cheap and cheerful end of the market. That’s why their engineers have worked so hard on the striking design of this new model, aiming to place the car brand at the same lofty heights as Suzuki motorcycles.
And they’ve done a pretty good job. The Kizashi certainly stands out from the crowd, with striking lines and bold styling, and they’ve been careful to avoid pitching it too firmly at the late middle-aged Lexus market by keeping the performance and the specification fresh and young.
Few official figures have been released on exactly how ‘great’ this something great will be, but with a 2.4 litre engine with a V6 option likely, it will be no slouch.
