Subaru a gearing up for the upcoming Motor Show in Tokyo by creating a variant on their Impreza STI, called the WRX STi Carbon.
The funky title for the car gives the impression that it is going to be something pretty spectaular, and ‘carbon’ screams out lightweight with an awesome performance that will spank the likes of the Scooby’s arch enemy, the Mitsubishi Evo. However, Subaru have not juiced up the engine of the WRX STi Carbon, they have left the 305bhp, all-wheel drive as is.
Admittedly, the existing STi engine is pretty impressive in itself, but the visual appeal of this car allures us into thinking it is more powerful than it is. The roof panel has been replaced with light-and-strong carbon-fibre to lower the centre of gravity whilst significantly reducing weight, and the Recaro seats are wrapped in a suede that grips your derriere into place and enhances ‘driving excitement’ while being thrown round the corners. The STi’s six-speed gear box has been ripped out and replaced with a five-speed automatic transmission.
With the Japanese public preferring automatic gearboxes, the WRX STi Carbon is going to be on sale just there for the meantime, but the engineers at Subaru might yet be persuaded to put the STi’s gearbox back in and sell it over here to us.
