Even for the most ardent eco-warrior, one of the major barriers to running an electric vehicle (EV) is simply finding somewhere to charge it when the juice runs out – and given the limited mileage range on most EVs this is not an uncommon occurrence. However, in a move to encourage the wider use of greener cars, Sainsbury’s has launched London’s first network of electric car charge points.
Even better news is that the supermarket giant said that the charge points will cost customers nothing to use, and with 11 stores across London providing the free service, motorists will always be close by a charging station, with about half of London’s population being no more than 3 miles from their nearest charge point.
More stores in London are being readied for charging stations, but the current list of stores includes: Beckton, Camden, Chiswick, Cromwell Road, East Dulwich, Greenwich Peninsula, Islington, North Cheam and Sydenham. The goal is to have electric charging at all major city stores within the next ten years.
London Mayor Boris Johnson warmly welcomed the news as he wants to have at least 25,000 charging spaces publicly available in London by 2015 and 100,000 electric cars as soon as possible.
