The Zoe ZE (zero emissions) is a little, all electric supermini which took centre stage at Renault’s stand in Frankfurt.
The funky looking Zoe is a four-seater and features gullwing front doors and innovative butterfly-style rear doors which also double as the boot opening. The roof is lined with solar cells and it even has an air conditioning system co-developed with cosmetics company L’Oreal.

No, this is not to help you out when you are late on the school run by applying your make-up, it is claimed to hydrate and perfume your skin while it cools! It also features a ‘detox’ filer which automatically shuts down vents if toxic substances are sensed, along with a ‘scent’ function to release essential oils, either relaxing smells if you are feeling a little stressed or smells to perk you up if you are feeling a little tired.
Considering this little trend setter is quite cute looking, at 4.1m long it sits on some chunky 21″ wheels which give it a sporty look at the same time. And Renault have thought of everything as the front and rear LED lights are covered in a polyurethane gel, protecting it from knocks and scrapes. Two small rear-view cameras are used instead of the normal side-wing mirrors. The seatbacks are attached to the roof rather than to the floor and the three passenger seats can be folded flat to free up cabin space further. The dash board inside the Zoe is mainly one big touch-screen, and a wide TFT screen which is housed in a glass bubble displays the sat-nav and remaining range. To make the journey easier and more pleasant, a computer system relays traffic information and gives details of the nearest charging points. The interior mood lighting can be customised or set to automatically adjust to the colour of the driver’s clothes, and the hands-free key card can be personalised by attaching a chip to any item of the owner’s choice.
The Zoe ZE Concept is powered by a 94bhp, 167 lb-ft electric motor, and its 0-62mph time takes an impressive 6.7 seconds with a top speed of 88mph. It also gives a 100-mile range between recharges, and once this little car does need re-charging, you can choose from three options; either a 20 minute quick charge for high-voltage points, a four-hour standard charge for a domestic supply, or a battery-swap at one of the Quickdrop battery exchange stations Renault is developing which only takes three minutes.
