Imagine 0-60mph in 3.2 seconds, lap times at Nurburgring faster than a Carrera GT, top speed of 198 mph, and most amazingly fuel economy of 78mpg and you have the Porsche 918 Spyder. It’s a serious statement of intent from Porsche and is wowing everyone at the Geneva Motor Show.
A button on the steering wheel allows the driver to choose from four different running modes. The E-Drive mode is for running the car under electric power alone with a range of upto 16 miles. The Hybrid mode uses both the electric motors and the V-8 together. The sport hybrid mode uses both as well but only in a more aggressive performance manner. The race hybrid is purely about performance.
The 918 hybrid is powered by a 500 horsepower V8 engine along with two electric motors which supply an additional 218 horsepower.
The high-tech interior provides a glimpse into the future. The driver and passenger are seated in contoured sports bucket seats which also form part of the cockpit and while the 918 Spyder is still a concept, the fact that Porsche is considering releasing a plug-in hybrid is a pretty big deal. We would definately like to think Porsche is bringing the sexy back into green with the 918 Spyder and hope to see it in the showrooms very soon.
The 918 Spyder is one of three Porsche models with hybrid drive making their world debut at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show.
