About to take to the road is the all-new lightweight Porsche Boxster Spyder, a driver-focused version of the mid-engined Boxster.
At 1275kg, the new Boxster Spyder is inspired by the 1954 550 Spyder which stood only 3-feet high and weighed in at only 550kg. And at only 5kg more than the 10-year-old 986 Porsche Boxster, the new Spyder will be the lightest Porsche you’ll be able to buy after unveiling at this month’s LA Auto Show.
It’s not just lighter, but also more powerful thanks to the Spyder’s 3.4-litre 6-cylinder engine which cranks out a stonking 320bhp, allowing it to slam the 0-62mph time in just 4.8 seconds and on to 166mph at the top end. This is however, only with the roof off. Porsche have developed the Spyder first and foremost for driving ‘al fresco’, which is what gives the Spyder its distinctive look, but may not make it the most versatile car for handling the UK weather.
With the roof gone, it still looks great. Lowered by 20mm, the silhouette is completed by a pair of humps extending across the boot lid to the rear spoiler, which transform the Boxster into something that closely resembles the Carrera GT.
Due to go on sale in February next year, the new Porsche will be eco-friendly, with their unique PDK dual-clutch auto gearbox producing an excellent 30.4mpg for a sports car.
