With the 2011 Chevrolet Caprice due to make a comeback in the US as the next cop car, the UK police are hot on their tails and are after the iMiEV to take on the role of criminal deterrent.
After Mitsibushi attended the National Police show last month, where the police-spec version of the iMiEV was shown wearing its full ‘uniform’, they have been inundated with requests from UK police departments to consider this motor as one of the first electric cars to be used as a law enforcement tool.
The police-spec version of the iMiEV hasn’t really changed much from the standard Mitsibushi model, apart from the obvious visual additions of fluorescent stripes and flashing blue lights! The iMiEV police-spec is still a four seater, has a range of 100 miles on a single charge and a top speed of 80mph.
Although the top speed is not the norm for any other police vehicles, the benefits of the iMiEV is its small size and nimble footing which will help it get through the traffic quicker. And the West Midlands Police will take their first delivery of the funky police wagon in December.
It could actually be quite comical, seeing one of these in a car chase!
