Nissan Land Glider – Four Wheeled Motorbike?

Nissan Land Glider

The Motor Show in Tokyo will display exhibits from crazy concepts to plain sensible motors.  Either way, there will be something for everyone when its doors open later this month, and Nissan are no exception, with their line up of exhibits catering for one and all on their stand alone.

Nestled in amongst Nissan’s selection of products, and taking the centre stage position, is their Land Glider, which is a two-seater electric car.  The designers of this tiny vehicle consider this the answer to congestion and parking problems, as it features a radically reduced overall width.  And due to its narrowness, the engineers have designed a leaning mechanism to shift the centre of gravity.

The whole vehicle screams out ‘motorbike’ with the leaning wheel system, and then there is the driving and passenger seating positions inside the car.  The driver is seated in the middle of the front of the cabin, with the rear passenger sitting directly behind in a tandem seat.  With a dashboard that looks like something from the future, there is a handle bar type steering wheel and cameras and monitors for rear view mirrors. So it’s probably a bike then, but Nissan are adamant it’s a car!

The Land Glider measures only 3100mm in length, 1415mm in height, and 1100mm in width.  Nissan say that due to the styling and the fact that it tilts through corners of up to an angle of 17 degrees, the car is designed to provide some of the fun and agility of a bike.

When this little motor is on the road, it uses sensors which check vehicle speed, steering angle and yaw rate and works out the angle of lean needed to negotiate a bend.

It is powered by two rear mounted electric motors which are fed by a lithium-ion battery mounted under the floor, and it also features an innovative crash avoidance system which will automatically steer you away from other vehicles or obstacles.
