New Mazda5 MPV Gets a Fresh Look

Design languages are extremely important in the automotive world, with BMW’s “Efficient Dynamics” and Ford’s “Kinetic Design” leading the charge. Not to be outdone, Mazda have “Nagare” or flow, and they have put it to extremely good use on the upcoming replacement for the Mazda 5.

You’ll see that the new Mazda 5 adopts the company’s wide-mouth grille from other models. But the swooping lines aren’t just arbitrary pen strokes either, as they have been carefully designed to reduce drag and thereby improve fuel efficiency. The aerodynamic improvements, when mated to a new fuel injected 2.0-litre petrol engine, a six-speed transmission and Mazda’s “i-stop” engine stop/start system, reduce overall CO2 emissions by 15 per cent compared to the outgoing model. A smaller 1.8-litre petrol and a diesel version should also be available when the car goes on sale towards the end of the year, and should be priced slightly higher than the current Mazda 5.

And it’s not just the Mazda 5′s new looks  that will appeal to buyers, with families expected to appreciate a practical seven-seat layout and improved access through sliding rear doors.

Although pictures have been release now, the new Mazda 5 will be revealed in the metal at the Geneva Motor Show in March.
