For the eighth successive month now car sales have risen with the market up 26.4% on this time last year. The car market has exceeded all expectations, with a total of 68,686 cars sold in the UK last month. 19.6% of the figure was from the scrappage scheme. The demand for smaller cars continues to rise and the three best sellers for February were the Ford Fiesta, Ford Focus and VW Golf.
The forecast for March traditionally known as the strongest month is looking positive with the new 10 plate but the new car market is expected to decline by nearly 10% in 2010 compared with 2009 particularly July through to December. The UK car market recovery is still fragile and the SMMT (The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders) is urging the Government to delay the new car tax rise which is planned to help maintain the increase in sales.
The top ten best selling cars for February:
1. Ford Fiesta
2. Ford Focus
6. Hyundai i10
8. Kia Picanto
9. BMW 3 Series
10. Peugeot 207
