Motorists to be Blamed for All Accidents Involving Cyclists

cyclistsIn an extraordinary bid to promote cycling, Government advisors are looking to make drivers legally responsible for any accidents involving cyclists, even if they aren’t at fault. Proposed changes to law include the intention to make the most powerful vehicle in an accident responsible for causing the accident.

This kind of approach is also being looked at by the European Commission who wants motorist’s insurance companies to fork out for pedestrians as well as cyclists hurt in an accident.

Although against the EC changes proposed last month, the Department of Transport are funding the work of Cycling England which has called for four key policy changes to be included a National Cycling Plan and Active Transport Strategy report. These include the onus being on motorists for accidents with cyclists, reduction of speed limits to 20mph in suburban areas, provision for cyclists in all town planning, and cycling being taught to all children.

The UK Government is spending £1 million on cycle routes in 18 towns across the country, and is therefore keen to promote cycling and alternative forms of transport. However, the assumption of guilt applied to motorists is seen as another attack in the battle between motorists and cyclists for control of our roads.

According to the RAC Foundation, if these measures come into effect – which would probably take many years – insurance premiums are expected to rise by 10% to cover the extra risk involved.

If you want to choose a less powerful option for your new car, just in case, why not take a look at leasing a Kia Picanto or Proton Savvy.
