Mercedes-Benz have strutted their stuff at the recent Detroit Motor Show by exhibiting this very dramatic sculpture previewing the next CLS, which is due to debut in concept form later this year.
The impressive futuristic design of the sculpture gives the first clues as to the design thinking behind the new CLS and also gives the strongest hints as to what to expect from Mercedes future styling plans. Due to hit showrooms at the end of this year, the new CLS model is still a big secret, and this sculpture is the first official look at the popular saloon.
The most noticeable feature, when admiring this elegant piece of art, is the massive Mercedes badge donning the front of the grille, which has been adopted from the SLS AMG supercar and Blue Zero Concept. The bodywork also appears to have a more dramatic look, with flared wheel arches and a series of bold lines running along the cars flanks.
The sculpture shows that the new CLS will share its rear end and some of its angles with the new E-Class. The only part that is really hidden from view is the headlamps, which are expected to be LED and take a more angular form than currently offered – like those fitted to the E-Class.
Overall, the effect seems to give the car a less controversial, classical coupe silhouette, and with Mercedes revealing that they are looking to begin building cars with a more retro, 1930′s inspired design over the coming years, we will have to patiently await the arrival of the concept.
