
Mazda have showcased their next-generation engine line-up and automatic transmissions at the 41st Tokyo Motor Show.
The Japanese firm have exhibited its Mazda SKY-D clean diesel engine, its Mazda SKY-G direct-injection petrol engine and the Mazda SKY Drive-high-efficiency automatic transmission, along with showing off their concept car, Kiyora for the first time in their home country. These all aim to improve efficiency without reducing driving pleasure.

The idea behind the ‘SKY’ approach is to use technologies that improve performance and efficiency simultaneously. The programme’s name comes from the idea of providing people with an “everlasting blue sky” no matter how many drivers are on the road. The company, have therefore, pressured their engineers to “employ unconventional thinking to achieve optimal performance n every vehicle that bears the Mazda nameplate”, according to press release.
The Kiyora concept car keeps in-mind Mazda’s fun-to-drive character, is powered by the new SKY-G 1.3-litre engine which promises to achieve an outstanding fuel economy of 3.1l/100 km.
Mazda will also be displaying other technologies which are designed to improve the average fuel economy of Mazda vehicle sold globally by 30% before 2015 compared to 2008 levels.
The Mazda Premacy Hydrogen Hybrid, with its advanced hydrogen-powered rotary engine will also be on show at the end of the month.
