On sale this October, the new Mazda 3 MPS takes the same bonkers 256bhp of the previous model’s turbocharged 2.2-litre, four-cylinder engine, adds it to a lighter body to improve overall performance.

It also adds ‘torque management control’ to try and keep all that power reigned in and stiffens the suspension along with new dampers to hug the corners. To match the performance (0-62mph in 6.1 seconds, limited maximum speed of 155mph), the visual impact of the MPS has been greatly improved with all the standard hot hatch accoutrements to make teenagers, of any age, drool!
Not one, but two rear spoilers plus side skirts and, to keep the intercoolers happy, a huge scoop in the bonnet. The aerodynamic aids all give better high-speed stability and give a more planted feel. Mazdas have always been good value for money, and the Mazda 3 MPS is no different.

There are no options other than paint colour, and even that is limited to four: red, black, silver and white. A high level of standard kit includes an excellent 10-speaker Bose stereo with iPod connectivity, Bluetooth, climate control, sat nav, a tyre pressure monitoring system, parking sensors, blind spot monitors and emergency stop signalling.
For a fast, but perhaps less refined, alternative to the Volkswagen Golf GTI or Ford Focus ST, the Mazda3 MPS should definitely be on your shopping list.
