Lease a Volkswagen Golf Plus from only £287.68 per month plus VAT.
The Volkswagen Golf Plus is in between the Golf and Touran and is an ideal choice for small families who are looking for a little extra space. The Golf is well built and good to drive and comes with some impressively economical engines.
The Golf Plus is available with two petrol and four diesel engines. The entry model is a 1.4-litre 80bhp which can struggle with a full load and is only available in the S trim. Average fuel economy is good though at 43mpg. There is another 1.4-litre TSI 122bhp which uses a turbocharger and is much quicker and takes 10.2 seconds to reach 0-62mph. It is very economical too and will average around 44mpg. The three TDI engines are much smoother and quieter than the diesels used in the previous Golf Plus. There is a 1.6 TDI which is available in either 90bhp or 105bhp. The 90bhp offers a nice drive and and very impressive fuel economy of 60mpg. The 105bhp is much quicker taking 12.5 seconds to reach 0-62mph. It has much more power too and is easier at overtaking. The top of the engines is the 2.0 TDI 140bhp which is very smooth and quick and will accelerate from 0-62mph in 9.8 seconds. It is also very economical and averages 55mpg. There is also a 110bhp version available too. In October 2009 a Bluemotion version was introduced which uses the 1.6-litre TDI engine with 105bhp and thanks to minor changes it will average a very impressive 66mpg and with low CO2 emissions of 114g/km it makes it much cheaper to tax too.
The Golf Plus offers much more room for passengers especially in the back thanks to its taller shape. There is plenty of leg and headroom and the rear seats are slightly raised making it much easier to get in and out especially if you have children in car seats. The controls and materials used are all high quality giving the interior a nice upmarket feel. There is plenty of adjustment in the steering column and driver’s seat so everyone should be able to find a suitable driving position. Wind and tyre noise is very minimal even on the motorway.
The boot is much bigger even though it isn’t much longer than the standard Golf hatchback. It boasts almost 400 litres of luggage space compared with 350 litres on the standard Golf. SE models come with a variable boot floor that has two different heights. The rear seats all individually slide forward and back to give more passenger or boot space if needed.
There are two trims available, the S and SE. The entry-level S model comes with air conditoning, a CD stereo, a multifunction computer, electric windows, electric heated mirrors, ESP stability control, remote central locking, height and reach adjustable steering, driver’s seat height adjustment and steel wheels. The SE trim adds parking sensors and Park Assist. It also comes with cruise control, a front centre armrest, rain sensitive wipers, automatic lights and 16-inch alloy wheels. The Bluemotion version, introduced in October 2009 is available in both the S and SE trims.
The Golf Plus hasn’t been crash test by Euro NCAP but the Golf hatchback has and was awarded the maximum five star rating for adult occupant protection and four stars for child safety so the Golf Plus should be the same. All models come with twin front airbags, side airbags and a curtain airbag system for all occupants. There are Isofix child seating mounting points in the two outer rear seats too.
The standard Golf is practical enough for most buyers but the Golf Plus offers that extra space and versatility which is perfect if you have a young family. It is well built and good to drive and choose the right engine and you will be rewarded with very impressive fuel economy.
