The Toyota Prius is a great green family car thanks to it’s spacious interior and large boot. Emissions and fuel economy are also some of the best around.
Hybrid cars may seem complicated but they are actually quite simple. The 1.8-litre 99bhp petrol engine along with an electric motor can provide more power when needed or can drive the car by itself. The electric motor is powered by high-performance batteries which are charged during deceleration and braking. Combine the petrol and electric motor and the Prius is capable of 134bhp, will reach 0-62mph in a time of 10.4 seconds and offers a very impressive average fuel economy of 70.6mpg giving the Prius a range of almost 715 miles on one tank of fuel. It is responsive on acceleration and pulls well making overtaking easy. CO2 emissions are also impressively low at 92g/km.
The interior of the Prius has a modern feel and easy to use layout. There is a digital display in the middle of the dashboard which shows speed, fuel level and can also be set up to display the Eco Drive Monitor which shows the battery is fully charged. Unfortunately the driver’s seat doesn’t move for height and the steering wheel could do with more reach adjustment but most people should still be able to find a comfortable driving position. There is plenty of space for four adults especially rear leg and headroom in the back. The engine is very quiet so even at high speeds there is very little wind noise and the ride is impressive too. The boot in the Prius is large and wide with a luggage capacity of 445 litres. The rear seats are able to split 60/40 and fold flat to create a long area for larger items. There is a very useful underfloor boot storage tray which is great for hiding items or from stopping them sliding around. There is plenty of storage in the front including a split-level glovebox and a large central bin between the seats.
The T4 model comes with front and rear electric windows, rain sensor windscreen wipers, rear wiper, ABS with brake assist, vehicle stability control VSC + traction control, Bluetooth telephone preparation, cruise control, electric power steering, multi-function display with trip computer, electric heated door mirrors, 8 speakers, radio/CD, body coloured bumpers, front fog lights, auto air conditioning, front armrest, leather steering wheel, leather upholstery, multi function steering wheel, rear armrest, Isofix rear child seat preparation, alarm, immobiliser, remote central locking, smart entry and smart start and 17-inch alloy wheels. The Prius scored the maximum of five stars in the much tougher Euro NCAP crash tests which were introduced in 2009 and cover Adult Occupant Protection, Child Occupant Protection, Pedestrian Protection and a new area of assessment which is Safety Assist Standard. The Prius comes with seven airbags and active headrests which help protect passengers from whiplash in the event of a collision. The structure of the bumper is also designed to help minimise the risk of leg injuries and the front wings feature an impact absorbing bracket to reduce the chances of a head injury.
