The Toyota iQ is a great city car that looks funky and will fit into any tight parking space.  It also comes well equipped and is cheap to run.

There is a 1.0-litre 67bhp engine which is extremely nippy around town and will take just under 15 seconds to reach 62mph.  Although it is great around town it does struggle to keep up on the motorway.  In 2009 a 1.33-litre petrol was introduced which produces 98bhp and returns and impressive fuel economy of 59mpg.  It is noticeably nippier too and will reach 0-62mph in 11.8 seconds.

The V-shaped centre console keeps all the heating functions together while the audio controls are located on the steering wheel.  A space-saving dashboard with a detachable glovebox allows the front passenger to sit further forward which provides more space in the rear.  Visibility is good although the large rear headrests can obscure the view out of the back window.  To fit in the rear seats, Toyota sacrificed a large chunk of the boot and the iQ only has 32 litres of space as a result.  Fold down the seats and this is increased to 242 litres.

The trims are very simple and come with the choice of either iQ, iQ2 and iQ3.  All models come with alloy wheels, manual air conditioning, power steering, electric door mirros, an MP3-compatible CD player and an auxiliary input socket to hook up an iPod.  iQ2 models add keyless entry, stop/start engine button, rain sensing wipers, an auto-dimming rear view mirror and automatic air conditioning.  The iQ3 comes with unique 16-inch alloy wheels and options include satellite navigation with Bluetooth connectivity and leather upholstery.  There are also three option packs called iStyle, iSport which add styling extras and iUrban which includes parking sensors.

In 2009 Euro NCAP introduced more stringent crash tests and the iQ was one of the first models to be tested and scored the maxmimum of five stars which is very impressive for a small car.  The new tests cover adult occupant safety and includes child and pedestrian safety along with a rear impact whiplash test.  It also comes well equipped with nine airbags as standard including the world’s first rear window curtain airbag which protects passengers in the back.  Isofix child seat points are also fitted in the beack along with a seatbelt reminder system and ABS with brake assist and traction control.  A thatcham immobiliser, perimeter alarm and deadlocks are all fitted as standard to help deter thieves.

The Toyota iQ is well equipped and cheap to run and offers the comfort and refinement of a bigger car.  It is also one of the most radical cars that Toyota has ever produced.
