The Renault Twingo is a mature small car that has a practical interior and space for four people.  The Sport versions are much quicker and great for driving around town.

There are three engines to choose from in the range.  The entry-level is a 1.2-litre petrol with 60bhp and takes 15 seconds to reach 0-62mph and can feel quite sluggish at times.  The higher spec model comes with a more powerful 1.2-litre 16v engine that has 75bhp and feels nippy around town even though it is still not a particuarly fast engine.  The GT model looks sporty but it still uses the same 1.2 engine, although it is fitted with a turbocharger to boost the power to 100bhp and is much quicker and better at motorway driving.  Both models come with a five-speed manual gearbox.

Inside, the Twingo has a modern feel which is partly due to the central instrument binnacle with orange LED read-outs.   The dash layout is simple to use although the stereo buttons are fairly small.  The steering wheel adjusts in height only but most people should be able to find a comfortable driving position.

It has been designed to accommodate four adults although as it is only available with three doors, getting in and out of the back can be tricky and can make fitting child seats a little difficult.  The Dynamique and GT models have four individual sliding seats and the rear two can slide forward and back which will improve rear space for passengers or the boot space if needed.  The boot can hold a minimum of 165 litres which is about the same as a MINI and more than the Toyota Aygo.  If you slide the seats forward, the space increases to 285 litres.  Fold both rear seats and it can be increased again to 959 litres.

The Freeway entry level model which was introduced in early 2009 is fairly basic but does come with a CD stereo, power steering, ABS with brake assist, electric front windows, two airbags, height-adjustable steering, remote central locking and Isofix child seat mounts.  The Extreme model adds front fog lights, side airbags, a pod-mounted rev counter, interior sports trim and sports body styling.  The Dynamique comes with air conditioning, alloy wheels and two independent sliding and folding rear seats.  The top of the range GT adds a leather steering wheel and gear lever, automatic headlights, rain sensitive wipers, sports suspension, a chrome-tipped exhaust, electrically-adjustable door mirrors and extra tinted glass in the rear windows.

The Twingo scored four out of five stars for adult occupant protection in the Euro NCAP crash tests which is good for a small car.  Front and side airbags are standard but curtain airbags cost extra on all models.  Stability control comes as standard on Renaultsport cars but unfortunately isn’t available as an option on the rest of the range.  Isofix child seat fixings for the rear seats and the front passenger seat are standard and deadlocks are fitted too.

The Renault Twingo is a mature and comfortable city car that has good interior space and low running costs thanks to its frugal engines and low carbon dioxide emissions.
