Lease a Peugeot 407 Saloon from only £349.43 per month plus VAT.
The Peugeot 407 is comfortable and very refined and comes with some smooth and punchy diesel engines and an interior that is well equipped.
The 407 entry level engine is a 1.8-litre petrol with 125bhp. It is a decent engine but unfortunately it can be a little noisy on the motorway. There is a 2.0-litre 143bhp and 2.2-litre 163bhp both of which offer good performance although they are not that economical to run. There is a 3.0-litre V6 engine which is the top of the range in the petrol engines but unfortunately it only averages around 28mpg. The diesel engines are much better suited to the 407, even the 1.6-litre HDi 110bhp which is excellent to drive and offers great fuel economy. The 2.0 HDi is the pick of the range thanks to strong in-gear performance along with good levels of refinement and an excellent fuel economy of 48mpg. In September 2008 it was updated and now offers 140bhp, is slightly more economical at 50mpg and has lower emissions. There is a top of the range 2.7-litre 205bhp V6 diesel which is smooth and powerful but fuel economy is not great. There is also a 2.2 HDi 170bhp which uses a twin-turbo system to deliver excellent pace and mid-range performance. The smaller petrol and diesel engines are fitted with a five-speed gearbox while the 2.2-litre petrol and 2.0-litre diesel both come with a six-speed box. A six-speed automatic gearbox is available on the larger engines.
There is plenty of space inside with decent leg and headroom in the back so all passengers should have a comfortable journey. The 407 will easily seat two adults or three children in the back and the middle seat is comfortable thanks to the flat transmission tunnel. Many of the controls are from smaller Peugeots which doesn’t appeal to everyone if you are looking for something a little more upmarket. The steering wheel adjusts for height and reach so everyone should find a comfortable driving position and forward visibility is good too. The boot can hold 407 litres of luggage but the narrow boot opening and the high lip limits what you can carry. There are storage compartments in the front armrest and a small area in the glove compartment too.
There are four trim levels available, S, SE, Sport and GT. The S trim is only available in the 1.8-litre engine and is fitted with climate control, a trip computer, electric front windows and a CD stereo. The SE trims adds an auto dimming rearview mirror, tyre pressure sensor, electric/folding door mirrors, automatic lights and wipers, rear electric windows and dual zone climate control. A luxury packs consists of part leather electric seats and parking sensors. The Sport trim adds a CD autochanger, electric seats and parking sensors while the top of the range GT models come with leather upholstery, heated seats, xenon headlights, cruise control, rear sun blinds and rear side airbags. In 2008 an SR model was introduced which is based on the S trim but comes with 16-inch alloy wheels, SmartNav satellite navidation and Bluetooth connectivity.
The 407 comes with excellent levels of safety and was awarded an impressive five stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests. It comes with upto nine airbags, (rear side ones only fitted on the top of the range models) and electronic stability control which helps to lessen the chance of the car sliding or losing control in slippery conditions.
The Peugeot 407 is very attractive and offers drivers a great driving experience and choose one of the diesel engines and you will be rewarded with low running costs.
