The Peugeot 4007 is built by Mitsubishi and is based on the 2007 Outlander but Peugeot has added its own unique styling and a strong 2.2-litre diesel engine.

There is only one engine available which is a 2.2-litre 156bhp turbodiesel and the acceleration time is good taking 9.9 seconds to reach 0-62mph while offering an impressive mid-range performance.   Average combined fuel economy is 40.4mpg with a top speed of 124mph.  Originally there was just a six-speed manual but in September 2009 a new dual clutch system was introduced which works in a similar fashion to Volkswagen’s excellent DSG gearbox and uses two clutches to provide super fast shifts.  The six-speed system can either be left in automatic mode or alternatively there’s a semi-automatic allowing the driver to change gear using paddles behind the steering wheel.

Five adults can sit comfortably with plenty of head and leg room.  The third row seats are more suitable for children or shorter trips although Peugeot doesn’t claim the 4007 as a full seven seater.  The interior has a high quality feel about it and the dashboard has a clean simple design.  Visibility is good thanks to the high driving position and all the main controls are easy to use.  The steering wheel adjusts for height only but the driver’s seat is adjustable and electric on GT models so everyone should find a suitable driving position.  With five seats in use the luggage capacity is around 441 litres and this is increased to 510 litres with the second row seats slid forward.  To increase luggage capacity further, fold all the seats down and this is increased to 1,686 litres.  There is plenty of storage with a split level glove compartment and decent sized door bins and a front centre armrest.  The maximum towing capacity is 2000k.

SE models come with 16-inch alloy wheels, cruise control, automatic climate control, roof bars, trip computer, an alarm, electrically adjustable/folding door mirrors, electronic stability control and a CD stereo with MP3.  The GT trim adds 18-inch alloy wheels, leather seats, CD autochanger, dark tinted rear windows, rear parking sensors and an electrically adjustable and heated drivers seat.  Further options include metallic paint, satellite navigation with hard disk music storage and a rear view camera, and a Bluetooth hands free phone kit is available on the SE and GT models.  A special edition Sport XS model was launched in May 2009 and is based on the SE model but has addtional items such as 18-inch alloy wheels, sport styling kit of chrome side bars, wing mirror covers and a twin tail pipe extension and body coloured front lower and rear spoilers.  Inside there are leather seats and Bluetooth.

To date the 4007 has not been crash tested but the Mitsubishi Outlander which is more or less identical was awarded four stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests for adult occupant safety.  Electronic stability control, twin front, side and curtain airbags are all fitted as standard.  The front passenger airbag can also be switched off to allow a rear-facing child seat to be carried in the front and all three second row seats have Isofix child seat mounting points.

The Peugeot 4007 handles well and offers a smooth, flexible engine and is well equipped and has plenty of room for five.  Peugeot appears to have learned from the mistakes of other car companies by producing a genuine contender to take on the best the 4×4 market has to offer.
