The BMW 1 Series Convertible is a stylish small convertible that is good fun to drive and comes with low running costs.

The 1-Series Convertible comes with a much wider choice of engines than the 1-Series Coupe.  The petrol engines range from a 118i through to a 120i, 125i and a top of the range 135i.  The 125i is probably the most popular of the petrol engines and comes with a smooth 3.0-litre 218bhp.  It also comes with a six-speed gearbox and is great both around town and on the open roads.  It is pretty quick too and will reach 0-62mph in a time of 6.8 seconds.  The 120d manages to reach 0-62mph in 8.1 seconds and still manages to return 55mpg.  The 118d is the most efficient with an impressive fuel economy of 58mpg.  The best diesel engine by far is the 123d which uses the same 2.0-litre units as the other two diesels but has twin turbochargers which deliver more than 200bhp and as a result will take just 7.5 seconds to reach 62mph.  Thanks to BMWs Efficient Dynamics system none of the engines are particularly thirsy and even the performance 135i model is capable of 30mpg.

The interior has a nice upmarket feel and the dash is well laid out with all the switches logically placed.  There is a height adjustable steering wheel and a multi-adjustable driver’s seat as standard so everyone should be able to find a comfortable driving position.  Every car comes with an engine stop/start button instead of a key ignition.  Head and legroom is a little tight in the back so the rear seats are more suited to children.  With the roof down the cabin is fairly quiet and with the roof up there is just a little wind noise.  Visibility is very good even with the roof up.  The electric folding roof can be raised or lowered at speeds of upto 30mph and takes around 22 seconds.  The 1-Series cabriolet uses a fabric roof which means less space is taken up in the boot which has around 305 litres of luggage space.  There is the option of BMW’s iDrive system which controls the satellite navigation, climate control and audio.

There are three trim levels available, ES, SE and M Sport.  The entry-level ES model comes very well equipped with air conditioning, electric windows, a CD stereo with an auxiliary input, 16-inch alloy wheels, stability control, run flat tyres and an electrically operated roof.  The SE trim adds key equipment such as multifunction steering wheel, heated mirrors, climate control, rear parking sensors and front fog lights.  The M Sport trim adds 18-inch alloy wheels, sports suspension, sports seats and M Sport body kit.  If you choose leather it will be fitted with sun reflective material as standard and this helps reflect the sun’s rays and makes the seats 20 degrees cooler than standard leather.  In 2009 a Sport trim was added to the range and comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, front foglights, heated mirrors, sport multi-function leather steering wheel and sports seats.

The 1-Series hatchback was awarded a maximum of five stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests for occupant protection and the Convertible shouldn’t be any different.  It comes with plenty of safety features and four airbags as standard.

The BMW 1-Series Convertible is fun and stylish and a good all rounder.  It is good to drive, refined and classy and best of all it is cost effective to run.
