Land Rover LRX – Baby Range Rover Finally Goes Ahead

Land Rover LRX

Although Land Rover introduced their prototype of the Range Rover LRX almost two years ago, they have just announced that they will be building a production version of this beastly, yet sleek looking off-roader to go on sale in 2011.  The grand unveiling is due to take place on 17th June next year, which will mark the 40th anniversary of the launch of the first Range Rover.

The LRX will be a fantastic addition to the Land Rover line-up, making it the smallest, lightest and most efficient vehicle the company has ever produced.  With the LRX being designed and engineered at Land Rover’s Gaydon facility, it will be sold in more than 100 countries around the world.  To help with the development of the LRX, the Jaguar-Land Rover Group has secured a grant of up to £27 million raised from the UK government’s successful scrappage scheme.

Managing Director of Land Rover, Phil Popham said “The production of a small Range Rover model is excellent news for our employees, dealers and customers… Feedback from our customer research also fully supports our belief that a production version of the LRX Concept would further raise the desirability of our brand and absolutely meet their expectations.”

The LRX design shows off a beautifully crafted, well-built, and muscular looking 4×4, which will come with either a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel that outputs 160bhp and 400Nm of torque, or an in-line six 3.2-litre engine that sports 230bhp and 317Nm of torque.

With Land Rover’s aim to significantly reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions, they have also confirmed a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel hybrid variant, and a strong possibility of an all-electric model.
