Hot on the heels of the Ford Focus RS and Renaultsport Megane R26.R, the already wild Honda Civic Type-R has been tuned up, stripped back and maxed out by Honda specialists Mugen. They’ve managed to produce a staggering 240bhp from a naturally aspirated (no turbo!) 2-litre petrol engine which redlines at 8700rpm, so you can make the most of the superb symphony of noise available in the first 5.8 seconds to 62mph and all the way up to a limited 155mph.
To improve performance to racing levels, Mugen have stripped the interior back to the bare bones with just two seats and little comfort or luxury, but have gone further with weight reduction by using copious amounts of plastic for bodywork, bumpers and spoilers. Suspension, brakes and tyres are all upgraded and lightweight alloy wheels result in a car that is very much focused on hard edged, thrilling driving but with just enough comfort for normal road use.
Unfortunately, the Mugen Type-R package doesn’t come cheap with an expected price tag of over £30,000 but a very limited production run will ensure exclusivity. Plus the chance to own an amazing car with the soul of the original GTi hot hatches, the sheer lunacy of the Clio V6 and the reliability of a Honda, will surely mean an orderly queue will needed.
While we can’t offer you the Mugen version, you can lease the excellent Honda Civic Type R from just £357.17 per month.
