
The Italians have developed the F70, another stunning supercar from Maranello known “as the ultimate, most advanced road car Ferrari has ever made”. Leaving the Lamborghini Reventon and even the Bugatti Veyron behind, this stallion is set to gallop.
As the successor to the Enzo, this sensational new Ferrari will, amazingly, be quicker, smaller, lighter, more agile and more fuel-efficient.
The twin-turbo V8 engine is likely to produce 660bhp, which is the same as the output created by the Enzo’s 6.0-litre V12. But backed by a lighter chassis, the F70 should be able to accelerate to 0-60mph in an impressive three seconds and onto a top speed of above 230mph. But despite this heroic performance, the engine will be relatively fuel efficient and offer reduced CO2 emissions.
The idea behind the downsized and lighter motor comes from the ‘Millechile’ (Italian for one-thousand kilos) concept. It is aimed at increasing the performance of future models by shedding weight and not by increasing power, and Ferrari have done this by equipping the F70 with a carbon fibre body, carbon ceramic brakes, and a race-orientated interior. This brings its total weight in at just 1,000kg, which is a full 365kg less than the Enzo.
An electric setup will also be used for part of the supercar, but this won’t be for fuel economy. The electric motor will rev-up the turbos to operating speeds faster than a normal setup, with the result being an elimination of turbo lag.
Just as with the Enzo, the F70 will be limited to a production of just 399 units, which remains true to Ferrari’s philosophy of always building one less car than you think you can sell! But you can’t just go and add your name onto the waiting list; buyers will need to be personally invited by Ferrari to produce the expected £600,000 asking price when the motor goes on sale in 2012.
