The standard Audi A5 surely has an A-list look about it and is likely to please all of Audi’s image-conscious buyers.  Perhaps the biggest news is the fuel saving start-stop system which cuts the engine when the car is stationary.  It’s a first for the Audi A5 and works just as well as the best on the market.

Instead of the metal folding roof it has a cloth roof that folds into a small space and like many of it’s rivals it doesn’t fill the boot when you lower it giving you a healthy 320 litres of luggage space and this grows to 750 litres with the roof up and the rear seats folded flat.  There is plenty of room for four adults in the cabin, although six-footers won’t want to ride in the back for the long journeys.  Heat reflecting leather seats are also available rather than standard leather seats and are said to be upto 20 degrees cooler after a day in the sun.

Fuel consumption is in excess of 40mpg for the manual 2-litre petrol and 3-litre diesel, but the 3.2 petrol dips to the low thirties.  All engines cover 0-62mph in around seven seconds.

Cabriolets don’t come much classier and the Audi A5 offers an impressive combination of elegance and sporty handling dynamics.   It’s hard to see how this one can fail.
