Audi are planning to take on Mini Cooper S and Alfa Romeo’s new Mito Cloverleaf with their stunning new S1, which is planned for release in 2011.
The compact hatch, which will sit at the very-top of the German firm’s all-new small car range, is based on the new Audi A1 and will feature a boosted version of VW/Audi’s Twincharger 1.4-litre TSI engine tweaked to produce 200bhp and 221ft-lb of torque. Although power may be down slightly compared to the S1′s competitors, this three-door motor will still be able to hold its own. Hooked up to a seven-speed S-Tronic twin-clutch gearbox and a lowered and stiffened suspension which may feature Audi’s magnetic dampers, the S1 should provide incredible performance. An estimated 0-62mph time of around six seconds is expected, a top speed electronically limited to 155mph with a combined fuel economy of 35mpg.
The Audi S1 should also look as good as it moves, with the production S1 featuring butch, sporting looks and a newer interpretation of Audi’s single-frame grille which was seen on the five-door Sportback concept. Along with the lowered suspension, the S1 will also get an aggressive body kit with deeper bumpers, roof spoiler, chrome-coloured accents, and some flared arches filled with some nice 19-inch alloys. Of course, you can expect the interior of this small performance car to be of high quality, with a flat-bottomed steering wheel, figure hugging lightweight sports seats and aluminium pedals and a version of Audi’s mobile electronic device.
The S1 is due to make its world debut at next year’s Paris Motor Show, and with sales kicking off six months later, there will be a waiting list for this little sports car. Audi plan to establish the rest of the A1 range before the S1 arrives in British showrooms. And you will need to put your hand pretty deep into your pocket, as prices for the S1 are expected at around £25,000.
