Audi are planning to resurrect their small people carrier with the A2 taking pride of place as one of the most desirable models in an exciting new compact car range.
When it goes on sale next year, the new A1 will take the supermini market by storm, so the German firm decided to add to their ever-growing range by including a fresh new MPV model too. Audi boss, Rupert Stadler stated, “The A1 will be our smallest car. But there is a gap in our product line-up – between the A3 and the A1 there’s room for an A2.”
The new Audi A2 will be based on the innovative and much-loved original A2 launched in 2000, and is likely to have an attractive blend of style, practicality and efficiency. Recent images on the web give an idea of what to expect from the new A2. It will have a more versatile interior, with a sliding rear bench and variable-height boot floor. Also expected is a raised seating position with lots of room for passengers in the back.
Looks wise, the A2 is also sure to be a big hit with image-conscious buyers. Audi have added a panoramic glass sunroof, chunky wheel arches and sleek but unique body style. The interior, borrowed from the A1, is said to be of top-notch quality too.
Under the bonnet, Audi are likely to offer a wide range of ultra-efficient units with a choice of petrol engines including a 1.2-litre supercharged and turbocharged TFSI, and a turbo 1.4-litre TFSI, along with a selection of small-capacity diesels. These engines will power the front wheels via a six-speed manual or twin-clutch DSG automatic gear boxes.
A price-tag of about £16,000 is to be expected when sales start in 2011.
