To celebrate the 50th anniversary of that most iconic of all British cars – the mighty Mini – the Royal mint are issuing four special £5 coins from Alderney.
The four coins celebrate the history, style, sports success and heritage of the definitive small car.
The first coin commemorates the Mini’s legendary designer Alec Issigonis, innovative engineer behind the first transverse engined small car. John Cooper, another name that will be forever associated with the Mini, is acknowledged on the second coin, which celebrates the Mini Cooper’s sporting success, including three wins at the Monte Carlo Rally.
The swinging sixties style of the mini is celebrated in colour on the third coin, commemorating the Carnaby Street chic of what was, at the time, Britain’s favourite car. The collection is completed by the fourth coin, which celebrates the Mini’s classic status, from its starring role in The Italian Job to its accolades of Car of the Century and Number One Classic Car of All Time.
