If you have a rusty old Vauxhall Viva or Ford Anglia at the end of your garden that you’re thinking of getting rid of, spare a thought for the lucky individual in America who pocketed a fortune recently from his banger.

A person in the US recently decided to put a 1963 Pontiac Le Mans Tempest on eBay with a $500 starting price. The body work was full of rust and dents, the interior was original but tatty, the boot was full of junk but, with no key to open it, whatever was in there came with the car.

There wasn’t even an engine or transmission but the owner knew the car had some racing pedigree given the plexiglass windows and a plate on the dashboard mentioning a racetrack, but he didn’t know that the car is one of only six ’63 Le Mans Tempest Super Duty coupes ever made and was the fastest drag car in that year before disappearing.

The eBay auction was full of drama, with the owner turning down an early bid of $160,000 because he thought he’d get negative feedback for selling a rusty heap for so much. With just a few minutes to go, the auction had raised the stakes up to $95,000, and a last minute bidding war sent the price rocketing to an amazing $226,521.

Just goes to show – one person’s trash is another’s treasure!

lease a car – it’s cheaper!
